Hi,
This page will provide an overview of the skills we have covered this month. You can find links to helpful websites by clicking the "more..." link. If you need to contact me, my information is under the CONTACT ME link. |
I apologize for in the picture at the top of this page. The website has been difficult to work with and will not allow me to change it. Oh well, Mother's Day should be everyday.
Math:
We have completed Module 4 on addition and subtraction. We will move rapidly through Module 5 which focuses on place value. We have integrated this concept daily during calendar and other counting opportunities. I do not expect that it will require much instruction.
Word Work:
We have moved into identifying words with long and short vowel sounds. The students have been taught to recognize long vowel patterns, such as " silent or lazy e" and " two vowels walking, the first one does the talking". This extension of letter sounds has impacted their reading skills. Many have met or exceeded the reading goals for Kindergarten.
Sight words:
We are playing game like SIGHT WORD UNO and GO FISH to support Sight Word recognition.
Under the "more" tab and Helpful websites for parents, you will find a list of the first sight words. We cover about 27 of these words. Please practice them at home.
This link will provide some fun activities to assist you. www.sightwords.com
Writing:
This past month, the focus has been on writing to teach. For adults, this would be writing a report. The children completed a practice piece reporting on what they learned about fish. Now an independent piece on isopods will be graded.
Science:
We are so fortunate to have a supportive PTA. With funds from the PTA, we invited Roger Williams Park Zoo in to our classrooms. The zookeeper brought in 3 animals. The children where able to gently pet each animal. The lessons focused on animal habitats.
